Teaching Spanish as a Foreign Language Qualification
Frequently asked questions
Is CERTELE an official qualification? This qualification certifies that the trainee has attended a 150-hour private course, the same as any other Masters or Teacher Training Course offered by a Modern Languages Centre affiliated to a University or Language School in Spain. No official course of this kind implemented by the Ministry of Education currently exists.

Does this qualification enable me to work abroad? This specific skills- based qualification enhances the C.V. of any person hoping to work in Spanish Languge Teaching. Establishments in different countries vary in their requirements; a Spanish teacher applying for a post in an American University may need a Doctorate or a Degree in Education as well as the Spanish C.A.P. teaching certificate. The CERTELE certificate indicates that you have specific teaching skills and it has proved to be invaluable to our students who have sought teaching jobs in private establishments abroad.

Will I be able to work for the Cervantes Institute? Academic qualifications, work experience and courses are all taken into account by the Cervantes Institute during the objective selection process. The 150-hour CERTELE course would most certainly be considered.

Does CERTELE provide me with points valid for the official Oposiciones Exams in Spain?
It depends. In 2004, points were awarded to candidates who had attended training courses in private establishments. Therefore, candidates with the CERTELE certificate would have been awarded points.

Is the course exclusively for Philology graduates? Absolutely not. Whilst a Philology degree is the most similar qualification ( 70% of our ex-students possess a degree in Philology), we have also had students from other fields such as Translation and Interpreting, Law, Primary School Education, etc.

Certain private establishments only accept Philologists, therefore, a degree in Philology is an advantage. Nevertheless, other establishments accept graduates from any field onto their teacher training courses.

It is useful to take note of the approach taken by The Cervantes Institute – Philology graduates have a distinct advantage but they don´t rule out candidates with other degrees providing they have prior work experience in this field.

What are the career prospects? Numerous establishments both in Granada and in foreign countries rely on us to recommend teachers thanks to the excellent reputation of our training courses. Our usual course of action is to put them in contact with our ex-students. All students who complete the course are automatically considered for vacant teaching posts at our school – all our Spanish teachers have completed the SHM teaching course.

Is the online course the same as doing the course at the school? Regarding the structure, the content and the practical teaching element of the online course, the same objectives are achieved. Furthermore, the qualification is exactly the same, regardless of whether you study at the school or online.

When is the deadline for enrolling on the course? There is no deadline, therefore you can enrol up to the day before the course starts. If you wish to reserve a place, we reccommend that you do so at least a few weeks in advance, especially if you are interested in doing the Intensive Course as the 10 places are filled quickly, sometimes even months before the start of the course.
